My parents emigrated from Belgium to the Belgian Congo colony after World War II. I was born in Africa in 1953, completed my secondary studies in a private Catholic school where I specialised in the humanities and learnt Latin and Ancient Greek. The family was uprooted again in 1972 and we all moved to South Africa.

I graduated as a civil engineer - B.Sc. (Engineering) Civil - from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1979. In those days, we did not really have access to personal computers, they were all mainframe. I still wrote exams using logarithmic tables for calculations!

My first computer was an HP which I bought in 1985 and I taught myself how to use it. The first spreadsheet I used was Lotus 123. I also started a degree in Commerce (B. Com.) by correspondence which I did not complete but it was sufficient to give me a solid foundation in Accounting.

In the early 1990s I used the Perfect Office suite from Novell and worked with Quattro Pro. It is only in the late 1990s that I started using Microsoft products: Word, Excel, Outlook.

I learnt HTML in the years 2004-2008 but I would not call myself an expert. I did a bit of CSS too.

I acquired my first Mac in September 2018.

It is only over the last year or so, at the tender age of 67 - one is never too old to learn! - that I became interested in shells, AppleScript, WordPress, regular expressions and several other technologies.

I find it all extremely interesting and challenging and it keeps me busy!
